Master Programme in Public Administration

The master programme consist of two years of full-time studies, in total 120 ECTS credits. We admit students both during autumn and during the spring semester. Please note that the programme is in Swedish.

The programme is a continuation of your previous programme at undergraduate level within sociology and is designed to prepare you for a profession. It increases your employability for advanced administrative work specialising in analysis and economics or organisation and management in a large variety of organisations. It can entail public administration at European, national or municipal level, or companies and organisations (both national and international) with a large interface with the public. The master programme also provides a solid theoretical specialisation.

Fields of work

You acquire analytical tools and advanced knowledge that constitutes an excellent basis for a large range of alternative career options. Naturally, you also obtain the qualifications for further studies at third level.

In other words, you acquire a qualification that is both academic and professional and are prepared for advanced positions such as analyst, economist, manager, human resources manager, auditor etc. Students from the School of Public Administration are currently working in public authorities in Sweden and abroad, in municipal and regional administration, in private companies and in non-profit organisations.

About the programme

The programme is delivered with modern and varied teaching methods, lectures are interspersed with seminars, group exercises and practical cases. There are various forms of examination including written work in groups and individually, smaller assignments to be handed in, as well as exams sat in halls and at home. During the programme you have the option of studying abroad for a term within the Erasmus programme at one of our partner universities in Europe, with the courses counting towards your degree.

Term 1 - During the first term you specialise in one of the two themes we offer.
a. Advanced theme: policy analysis
The object of study in policy analysis is public policies and programmes, and the processes by which these are formulated and implemented. You specialise in central aspects of policy analysis; implementation, evaluation and political means of control. These three parts comprise important aspects of how public policy is governed, implemented, organised and followed up. An in-depth knowledge in the field gives you the ability to work with advanced investigatory work in the public sector.
b. Advanced theme: organisation and management
Within organisation and management we provide you with analysis tools derived from organisation research to give you an advanced capacity to analyse and understand public organisations’ structures and processes. We particularly emphasise the management perspective as well as the organisation’s relationship to the world around it. An in-depth knowledge of the field gives you the ability to work in top executive positions in the public sector.

Term 2 -  During the second term you specialise in method and optional courses. This gives you the opportunity to create your own profile with unique knowledge based on your interests.

Term 3 -  During the third term you can choose between a work placement and studying optional courses. We can offer you the opportunity of a placement at exciting workplaces within, for example, the Government Offices, embassies abroad and at workplaces in the Gothenburg area. Find out more about placements here. There is also the opportunity to locate parts of the study period within the Erasmus programme at one of our partner universities in Europe, with the courses counted within the programme.

Term 4 - The fourth and final term is devoted to a degree project in the form of an essay. Here you have the opportunity to use the skills you have acquired during the programme to write an essay. Together with a supervisor you can enter more deeply into an academic area that suits you. You can also do your essay abroad within the framework of Minor Field Studies.
