Dissertation project

Managing Grand Challenges - How Scandinavian Municipalities Prevent Radicalization to Extremism

The uncertainty of how to act, the growth of violent extremist groups and the responsibility put upon the municipalities, has fueled and intensified an ever surrounding, heated, intense and polarized medial and political debate about work to prevent violent extremism (PVE) in the Scandinavian countries. My compilation thesis consists of four papers that combined contribute to this debate by describing and analyzing, through an organizational institutionalism lens, how Scandinavian municipalities organize to prevent radicalization to extremism. More specifically, I aim to describe the emergence of the organizational field, how municipalities translate the idea of radicalization into policy, what actions that are to be undertaken in municipal PVE-work and what institutional logics that guides such work.
