Om Gregg Bucken-Knapp

Gregg Bucken-Knapp (Ph.D., The George Washington University 1999) is Professor in public administration. His research interests are migration and integration in a broad policy and administrative context.

His most recent book, Messages from Ukraine (co-authored with Joonas Sildre, University of Toronto Press, 2022) is a short graphic novel exploring the varied experiences of Ukrainians following the full-scale Russian invasion: those who were forced to flee home and seek safety elsewhere in Ukraine or abroad, those who remained to take part in war efforts, those who were abroad at the time and witnessed the unfolding of events from afar, and those who found themselves trapped in Ukrainian cities under siege.

Additional publications include monographs with State University of New York Press and Lexington Books, monographs and anthologies with Palgrave Macmillan, edited special issues with Comparative European Politics, and articles in International Migration, Journal of European Public Policy, Human Rights Review, European Studies, Nordic Journal of Migration Research and Journal of Baltic Studies, among others.

Bucken-Knapp has been awarded funding for his research from a variety of national and international funding agencies, including the U.S. Fulbright Foundation, the Swedish Research Council and the Danish Social Science Research Council. He has also served on projects that have been funded by Joint Projects Initiatives – Urban Europe, European Commission DG Justice: Rights, Equality and Citizenship Program, and the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research.

He is also highly active in the internationalization of higher education, and has developed institutional cooperation between SPA and several universities in the Eastern Partnership countries and the Russian Federation. He has contributed to the teaching programs of higher educational institutions in Belarus, Georgia, the Russian Federation and most recently to the University of Tokyo, Japan as a Teaching Sabbatical Fellow financed by the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education in 2019-20. His internationalization initiatives have received funding from the Swedish Institute, the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Swedish Council for Higher Education, the European Commission Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Program, and he has served on capacity development projects financed by Sida.

Bucken-Knapp currently serves as the lead organizer for Swedish Institute Academy for Young Professionals training modules focusing on migration and integration. He leads the Managing Migration Learning Community in the EUTOPIA European University alliance, and is the course leader for Managing Migration in University of Gothenburg’s annual Summer School for Sustainability.
