Local Government Studies

According to the Constitution’s opening paragraph, Swedish democracy is realised through municipal self-government. Local democracy is thus a cornerstone in the Swedish form of government, and studies concerning the multi-level issues that it entails are an important aspect of administration research.

The School of Public Administration has a long tradition of researching local and regional policy and administration and the department has participated in several major programmes over the years, for example, the comprehensive evaluations of the town district committee system in Gothenburg and the Västra Götaland region.
The School of Public Administration is represented in the international network of local government research bodies that conduct comparative research at the European level, and we are the coordinating department in Sweden for the Nordic Local Government Studies Network. Furthermore, we have a long established and well developed collaboration with a number of Swedish municipalities in the vicinity of Gothenburg, as well as the Västra Götaland region, with the aim of strengthening research into administration.
