About Gregg Bucken-Knapp

Background
Gregg Bucken-Knapp is Professor in the School of Public Administration. He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from The George Washington University (Washington, DC) in 1999, with a specialization in comparative politics.

Research Interests:
Bucken-Knapp’s broad research interest is comparative public policy, particularly with regards to immigration and immigrant integration policy in a Nordic context.  He has most recently served as the transnational research coordinator for the European Commission Directorate General Justice funded project ”Local Welcome Policies: EU Migrants” (2015-2016), and was a researcher on the European Joint Programming Initiative: Urban Europe financed project “Urban Implications and Governance of CEE Migration” (2014-16).  Previous major grants include funding from the Swedish Research Council and the Danish Research Agency. Bucken-Knapp has also been the recipient of a Fulbright Grant. 

He is also convenor of the Political Studies Association Comparative European Politics Specialist Group.

Internationalization Activities:

Bucken-Knapp is keenly interested in the internationalization of higher education, having previously served as the Director of International Initiatives at the School of Public Administration.

He is currently the project leader for a Nordic Council of Ministers financed project to develop an international PhD course on migration, together with colleagues at Aalborg University in Denmark and Lomonosov Moscow State University in the Russian Federation.

He has been the recipient of a Swedish Institute Visby Fellowship that allowed him to spend parts of auutumn term 2015 at Lomonosov Moscow State University, where he taught a coursefor PhD students on methods and approaches in comparative European politics.

Bucken-Knapp was also a consultant on the SIDA-financed project "Swedish Support to the Academy of Public Administration under the aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus", led by the Swedish Institute for Public Administration. 

He has also twice been awarded International Staff Mobility funds (non-EU) from the University of Gothenburg International Centre in support of his internationalization acitivies.  In 2014 he received funding for site visits at several universities in the Russian Federation, and in 2016, he received funding enabling him to teach a short course at the Academy of Public Administration under the aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus.

Bucken-Knapp also speaks regularly at international conferences focusing on training civil servants in Eastern Europe and post-Soviet states.  Most recently, he has made presentations regarding the internationalization activities of the School of Public Administration at two United Nations Development Project conferences, one in Minsk, Belarus (2016) and one in Baku, Azerbaijan (2017).

For the 2017-18 academic year, Bucken-Knapp has been awarded a Swedish Institute Visby Fellowship to teach at the Academy of Public Administration under the aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus.  He will also be teaching a course for PhD students at the School of Public Administration, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russian Federation.
